Background of the Study
Teacher training has emerged as a critical factor in improving the quality and delivery of sport education. Recent initiatives aimed at professional development have fostered innovative teaching methodologies that integrate theory with practical application, thereby enhancing learning outcomes (Adebayo, 2023). In secondary schools across Yola North, systematic training programs have been linked to improvements in instructional quality, better lesson planning, and increased use of modern pedagogical tools (Ibrahim, 2024). These programs not only aim to update teachers’ technical skills but also stress the importance of fostering an inclusive learning environment. The infusion of contemporary coaching techniques and curriculum updates has provided a platform for educators to adapt to the dynamic demands of sport education. In addition, empirical findings suggest that ongoing teacher development is associated with heightened student engagement and improved athletic performance (Okoro, 2025). Challenges such as resource limitations and varying educational standards further underline the necessity for targeted teacher training as a means of sustaining high-quality sport education (Adetola, 2023). Consequently, the intersection of teacher training and sport education delivery has garnered significant scholarly attention as a vehicle for systemic improvement in educational outcomes (Balogun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of teacher training, many secondary schools in Yola North struggle with inconsistent delivery of sport education. While some educators benefit from regular professional development, others lack access to updated training modules, resulting in uneven teaching quality (Eze, 2023). This disparity contributes to lower student engagement and suboptimal athletic performance. Moreover, institutional constraints—such as insufficient funding and inadequate training facilities—exacerbate the problem (Ogundele, 2024). The gap between policy intentions and on-ground realities creates a pressing need to examine how teacher training influences sport education delivery. Without uniform training standards, the benefits of innovative teaching methods remain localized and unsustainable, thus limiting the broader impact on student development (Uche, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of teacher training on instructional quality in sport education.
2. To determine the relationship between training initiatives and student engagement in physical activities.
3. To evaluate challenges and opportunities in implementing comprehensive teacher training programs.
Research Questions
1. How does teacher training influence the delivery of sport education in secondary schools?
2. What are the effects of professional development on student engagement and athletic performance?
3. Which challenges hinder the effective implementation of teacher training programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant positive relationship between teacher training and the quality of sport education delivery.
2. Enhanced teacher training correlates with increased student engagement in sports.
3. Institutional challenges significantly moderate the effectiveness of teacher training initiatives.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on the nexus between teacher training and sport education delivery. It will inform policymakers and educational administrators in developing targeted training programs and addressing infrastructural challenges, ultimately enhancing student performance and overall school outcomes (Akin, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Yola North Local Government Area, focusing solely on the impact of teacher training on sport education delivery. It does not extend to primary schools or other educational sectors.
